FAQs

Paint quantities: questions

How much does a litre of paint cover?

Most emulsions cover roughly 10 to 14 square metres per litre per coat on smooth, sealed walls. Porous new plaster, rough surfaces and strong colour changes use more. Check the coverage figure on your tin.

How many coats do I need?

Usually two coats on previously painted walls in a similar colour. New plaster needs a mist coat first, and big colour changes, especially light over dark, can need three.

Should I buy extra paint?

Yes. Buy a little more than you need and keep it for touch-ups. Colours mixed in different batches can vary slightly.
