Exterior painting in Leeds
Render, masonry, timber and metalwork prepared for what the Yorkshire weather will throw at it, then finished to look sharp from the street.
Exterior painting
What the work involves
An outside paint job lives or dies on the weather and the preparation. Walls are washed and treated for algae, loose and blown paint is scraped back, cracks in render are cut out and filled, and bare timber is primed the same day it is exposed. Only once a surface is sound and dry does the finishing coat go on.
Different surfaces need different paints. Breathable masonry paint suits most render and pebbledash, mineral or limewash finishes are better on old stone that needs to dry out, and timber windows and doors want a flexible system that moves with the wood instead of cracking. We specify each part of the house separately rather than putting one product on everything.
We plan exterior work around the forecast and the temperature, which in Leeds usually means April to October. Access is arranged in advance, whether that is ladders, a tower or scaffold, and neighbours are told before anything goes up.
The process
How we approach it
- 01
Survey
We look at every elevation, check for damp, rot and failed paint, and agree what is being painted.
- 02
Clean
Walls washed and treated for algae and mould so the new coat bonds to sound material.
- 03
Repair
Cracks filled, rotten timber cut out and spliced, bare wood primed straight away.
- 04
Coat
Finished in the right system for each surface, with drying time respected.

Straight advice
Worth knowing before you book
Old stone
Stone houses across Wharfedale and the older Leeds villages often need breathable finishes. Sealing old stone with a plastic paint can trap moisture and make damp worse.
Rot in windows
Small areas of rot can usually be cut out and repaired with resin or a timber splice before painting, which is far cheaper than replacing a whole window.

Questions about exterior painting
When is the best time to paint the outside of a house?
From late spring to early autumn, on dry days with temperatures comfortably above freezing overnight. We book exterior work around the forecast and will move a day rather than paint onto damp walls.
Do you put up scaffolding?
Where it is needed, yes. Many houses can be done from ladders and towers; three-storey terraces and tall gables usually need scaffold, which we arrange and include in the quote.
Can you paint uPVC windows and doors?
Yes. uPVC can be cleaned, keyed and spray finished in a coating made for plastic. See our spray painting page for how that works.
How long will exterior paint last?
It depends on the surface, how exposed it is and how well it was prepared. Good preparation and the right system are what give a finish a long life, and we will give you honest expectations for your house at the survey.
